There are a number of different products available to treat nasal congestion and each type of product works differently.
Non-Medicated Saline Nasal Sprays:
Non-Medicated Saline Nasal Sprays such as the FESS® Range help relieve nasal congestion by thinning the mucus and moisturising dry nasal passages. FESS® washes away allergens, dust and pollens and promotes the Mucociliary Clearance System.
FESS® Products help to clear nasal passages, they will not work as quickly as a decongestant (vasoconstrictor) as they act to thin the mucus rather than temporarily reducing the nasal turbinates.
FESS® products can be used as often as necessary for as long as required, they will not cause Rhinitis Medicamentosa (rebound congestion).
Medicated decongestants (vasoconstrictors):
Medicated decongestants temporarily reduce the size of the nasal turbinates, opening the nasal airway and providing decongestant relief.
Vasoconstrictors do not relieve allergic reactions such as sneezing and runny noses. Vasoconstrictors can lead to a condition known as Rhinitis Medicamentosa (nasal spray addiction as a result of rebound congestion) if used for more than 3 consecutive days.
Vasoconstrictors are therefore not indicated for long term use.
Nasal steroids (corticosteroids):
Nasal steroids (corticosteroids) help reduce inflammation in the nose and help provide relief from sneezing, nasal congestion and a runny nose.
Nasal steroids work gradually and must be used continuously as nasal allergy symptoms may return if you stop using the nasal steroid.
Antihistamines:
Antihistamines are a type of medication that block the effects of histamine in your body.
Histamine is a substance that is released by cell’s in your body’s tissues as a protective mechanism against foreign particles, and can provoke certain allergy symptoms such as congestion, sneezing and a runny nose.
